GLORNEY TOURNAMENTS 2008
report by Claire Summerscale

The English Chess Federation were proud to host the Glorney tournaments this year,
especially as the tournaments were held in Liverpool, in its year as European City of Culture.

We were thrilled to welcome teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales
for a three hard fought days of international chess.

Thank you to Professor David Robertson,
who delivered an inspirational speech at the closing ceremony.
He talked about his own experiences representing his country at chess and reflected that:
"Being chosen as the best of the best by your nation, is the finest thing.
You can do no better than represent your country, and should be justifiably proud."

Congratulations to all those who competed at the Glorney tournament this year.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the John Robinson Trust, the Glorney tournaments were able to present two brand new silver trophies this year.

The Under 12 tournament will henceforth be known as the John Robinson Cup, in memory of John who did so much for English chess.

I'm proud that the under 18 girls' championship will now be the Jessie Gilbert Cup.

Jessie touched so many people's lives and it was a tragedy to lose her at such a young age.

It means a lot to me personally that two such important figures in English chess will now be remembered through these annual tournaments.

We were also able to present a new silver trophy in the under 14 section. Thank you to Stephen Stokes, who has generously donated the Bernadette Stokes Cup.

Four tournaments were held at this prestigious international junior tournament,
you can find the results of each tournament here.
